Invalid serial numbers
If you are receiving a message 'Invalid Serial Number' when trying to install Auralia, please check the '1's ('ones') and 'I's ('eyes'), as they can easily be confused. For example;
AUWLM 300 EXP WUQ R5I 007 413
or
AUWLM 300 EXP WUQ R51 007 413
Note the fifth group of characters - the first example reads as 'R', '5', 'I' (eye) where as the second example reads as 'R', '5', '1' (one).
Balancing
Wave and MIDI Sound Levels (Question and Answer sounds too soft)
Auralia plays the question sounds using the MIDI device on your
sound card, or an external MIDI device if you have one. The Opening,
Closing, Right and Wrong sounds are Wave sounds, using a different
part of your sound card. If there is an imbalance in these sounds,
you can correct it by following the instructions below.
-
-
Click on the small speaker
icon located on the toolbar. This will load the Windows volume
control.
-
Adjust the sliders for the 'Wave'
device and 'MIDI' / 'Synthesizer' device.
If these devices are not available, click on
the 'Options -> Properties'
menu. From
this screen, you should be able to enable the
devices you require using the
list of available volume controls. Click
on OK.
-
Close the mixer and test the
new levels in Auralia.
-
To make further adjustments, repeat the above steps.
No sound when practising (MIDI Sound)
When you are practising, Auralia plays the questions using a MIDI
device. In most cases, this is built into your soundcard, however,
you may also use external keyboards and soundmodules. If you can't
hear any sound, follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
Check Auralia MIDI Settings
-
Start Auralia
- Open the 'Administration -> Sound and Pictures -> MIDI
Sound' menu.
- Ensure that the box 'Enable MIDI output' is ticked
- Choose your MIDI Ouput Device from those listed under the box 'MIDI Output Device'.
- Click on the 'Test MIDI Playback' button to test the device. If you don't hear any sound try another device or the check your volume levels below.
Check Windows MIDI Volume Settings
- Start Auralia
-
Click on the small speaker icon located
on the toolbar. This will load the Windows mixer.
-
Check that the MIDI slider is not muted. Note that
depending on sound card manufacturer, the a ticked box at the bottom
of each
slider may mean 'mute' or 'active'.
If the MIDI slider is not available, click on the 'Options
-> Properties'
menu. From this screen, you should be able to enable
the MIDI volume control using the list of available volume
controls. Click on OK.
-
Increase the MIDI volume if necessary and close the mixer.
No
response when using a microphone in Auralia.
Assuming that your microphone is working, and connected properly,
you shouldn't have any problems using the singing topics. To test
if you microphone is working properly, follow the steps below.
Check that Microphone Recording is active
-
-
Click on the small speaker icon located on
the toolbar. This will load the Windows volume control.
-
Click on the 'Options -> Properties'
menu.
-
In the box marked 'Adjust volume for', click on 'Recording'.
-
In the list of volume controls, check the 'Microphone' is ticked.
-
-
Check that the Microphone slider is not muted. Note that depending
on sound card manufacturer, the a ticked box at the bottom of each
slider
may
mean
'mute' or 'active'.
-
Leave the Microphone slider level at roughly half. However, you may
need to adjust this later.
Check that the Microphone is working
-
Click on 'Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound
Recorder'. Note that depending on your version of Windows, the Sound
Recorder may be under a different menu. It is extremely likely however,
that it is somewhere under 'Start -> Programs -> Accessories'.
-
Click on the record button, speak into your microphone
and press stop.
-
Now press the play button. If you can't hear what you have just
recorded, then there may be a problem with the microphone, or the
way it is connected to your computer. The type of microphone that
you are using should not matter a great deal.
Further microphone problems
If you are consistently getting incorrect answers, consult the instructions
in the Auralia help file.

Locked out of administration
If you have forgotten your administration password, or have forgotten your user name and password, you will be locked of of the program, or perhaps just the administration areas. The only way back into the software is to delete the 'rising3.fdb' database file, however, this will result in all your settings, users, classes, tests and user results being lost.
You can also email us the 'rising3.fdb' file - we can unlock it for you and send it back.
If you do decide to delete your 'rising3.fdb' file, it is typically located in 'C:\Program Files\Rising Software\Data3\'. Auralia will automatically generate a new database when it starts up.
Problems running under Windows 95 - 'Unable to load fbembed.dll'
If you are running under Windows 95 and see the error 'Unable to load fbembed.dll' when you start Auralia 3.0, you need to install some updates.
First download and install the Windows Socket 2 update from the following website;
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wuadmintools/s_wunetworkingtools/w95sockets2/default.asp?
You should then download and install the Microsoft DUN 1.3 and Winsock2 Year 2000 Update;
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUNetworking/dunwinsky2k/Default.asp
Auralia should now function correctly.
