Table of Contents

How to use an external microphone

Firstly test that the microphone works with the system:

  • Open "System Preferences..." under the Apple menu.
  • Click on the Sound panel to bring up the sound preferences.
  • Click on the Input tab.
  • Select your input source (the microphone).
  • Adjust the input volume so that when you sing you get a strong signal that does not reach the maximum level.

Now test that the microphone works with Auralia

  • Launch Auralia
  • Select Administration -> General -> Sound and Display
  • Select the microphone as the input source under the "Sound Input" popup.
  • Click on the "Test" button.
  • Adjust the gain slider so that when you sing you get a strong signal that does not reach the maximum level.
  • Check that the correct note displays when you sing.
  • Click Exit then OK.

Timeout trying to open database files...

The following message appears even though Auralia is being used only on a single machine or the network is not busy "Time out trying to open database files - either you do not have write permission for the files (they could be locked) or there is too much traffic on the network. Do you want to keep trying?"

To solve this you need to do two things:

1) delete any file whose name ends in ".lock" in the database folder. By default this is "/Library/Application Support/Auralia Data".

2) update to the latest version by downloading the updater from:

Locked out of administration

If you have forgotten your administration password, or have forgotten your user name and password, you will be locked of of the program, or perhaps just the administration areas. If this is the case, you can get back into the software by following these instructions.

This will delete all your preferences including the location of the shared databases (but will not change the databases themselves). You will need to reset all your preferences including the location of the databases if not using the default location.

  1. Select Administration -> Data ->Network
  2. Click on "Show Files"
  3. Click on OK
  4. Delete /Library/Application Support/Auralia Preferences
  5. If the above file is not present (version 2.1.2 and earlier)
    • find the Auralia application in /Applications in the Finder
    • hold down ctrl button and click on the application to bring up a popup menu
    • select "Show Package Contents" from the popup to open a new window
    • delete the file "Auralia Preferences" in the "resources" folder in the "Contents" folde

Rhythms are not played evenly in exercises

This problem is usually resolved by updating to the latest version of Auralia for Macintosh, and also updating to the latest version of QuickTime.

No more than 10 workstations can concurrently connect when using Auralia

If you cannot manage to get more than 10 concurrent users using Auralia on your network, the problem will lie in your choice of file server for the Auralia databases. Workstation versions of Mac OS limit the number of other machines accessinsg them to 10. You will need to use dedicated server software such as Windows NT Server, Linux, or AppleShare.
